Wisdom Teeth Extraction Mosman

Is a wisdom tooth causing you pain or other problems? Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow in the mouth, but sometimes they’re more trouble than they’re worth. If a wisdom tooth is trapped in your gum, pushing against your teeth or causing other problems, our dentists at Mosman 3D Dental can remove it safely and painlessly.

Wisdom tooth removal is a common dental procedure that’s performed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain. To find out more or book an appointment for wisdom teeth extraction in Mosman, call our clinic today on (02) 9969 8610 or book online.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth (also called third molars) are the last teeth to erupt at the back of the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. There are four wisdom teeth in total, one in each corner, but not everyone gets them.

When wisdom teeth erupt normally, they should feel no more painful than when any other tooth comes through. However, these teeth often cause problems, especially if there isn’t enough space in your jaw for extra teeth.

When do wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

Wisdom teeth don’t always have to be removed, but if they’re causing problems in your mouth, or putting your health at risk, extraction can be the best solution. Our dentists usually recommend removing wisdom teeth that are:

  • Impacted (stuck) in the gum and unable to erupt
  • Partially erupted, which can leave the tooth open to infection
  • Over erupted and extending too far into the mouth
  • Erupting at the wrong angle
  • Putting pressure on the surrounding teeth, which may lead to crowding or misalignment

If you have pain, sensitivity or swelling at the back of your mouth, these can be signs of a wisdom tooth problem.

What happens during wisdom teeth removal?

Extracting a wisdom tooth is generally more complex than a normal extraction, but this depends on the condition and position of the tooth. Upper wisdom teeth are usually easier to remove than lower wisdom teeth, and a tooth that’s already erupted will be easier to remove than a tooth that’s impacted in the gum.

Some wisdom teeth may be removed by loosening the tooth in the jaw and pulling it. More complex cases may involve opening the gum to access the tooth and removing it in pieces, along with treating any infection present.

Does wisdom tooth extraction hurt?

Our dentists will administer local anaesthesia before extracting a wisdom tooth to numb pain responses in your mouth. Your mouth may feel sore after the anaesthesia wears off, which can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain relief.

It can take from a few days to a week to recover from wisdom tooth extraction. To aid your recovery, it’s important to avoid hard foods and smoking for a few days, and to take care when brushing and flossing around the extraction site.
