What are Invisalign and clear aligners?
Clear aligners are dental devices made from a strong, transparent plastic that are custom-made to fit closely over your teeth. Like braces, aligners apply minor pressure to teeth that causes them to move into a more desirable alignment. Unlike braces, clear aligners can be taken out when needed, and are virtually invisible in the mouth.
Invisalign was the original clear aligner system and is still the gold standard for ‘invisible’ aligners. At Mosman 3D Dental, we offer a choice of standard Invisalign, Invisalign Go and other aligner brands to suit your needs and price range. Invisalign Go is a faster treatment suitable for more minor adjustments.
What can Invisalign fix?
Clear aligners are a good alternative to braces for most people. Our dentists may recommend Invisalign and other clear aligners to treat a range of orthodontic issues, depending on their complexity. This includes:
- Overbite
- Open bite
- Crooked teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps in teeth
Invisalign may also be effective in some cases of underbite or crossbite. However, if you have a more complex orthodontic problem, or more straightening is needed, we may recommend braces.
How does Invisalign work?
If you choose Invisalign, Invisalign Go or other clear aligners at Mosman 3D Dental, our dentists will first take digital impressions of your teeth that are used to design your custom aligners. These are made from a soft but sturdy material that’s designed to fit comfortably over your teeth, like a mouthguard.
Each set of aligners is used for around two weeks before being replaced with the next set, gradually moving your teeth into their new position. We’ll schedule regular appointments at our clinic so our dentist can provide you with your next few sets of aligners and help with any issues you might have.
What to expect with clear aligners
You may feel some pressure or soreness when changing to a new aligner, but they are generally more comfortable than braces. As the aligners can be removed, they also won’t affect how you eat or clean your teeth.
Treatment with clear aligners can take anywhere from a few months using Invisalign Go to two years or longer for more intensive teeth straightening. For the best results from your treatment, we recommend wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours each day.
