What is root canal therapy?

Root canals are hollow spaces inside your teeth where the nerves and soft tissues of the dental pulp connect to the body. If these tissues are damaged or infected by bacteria, this can cause severe pain or sensitivity in the tooth, along with other symptoms of infection.

Root canal therapy (also called endodontics) is a procedure performed by dentists that involves removing this infected tissue, replacing it with a synthetic substitute, and sealing the tooth to prevent further infection.

Most pulp infections can be treated with root canal therapy. However, if a tooth is too badly damaged to repair, our dentists may have to extract it. We’ll always try to save a tooth when possible.

What happens during root canal therapy?

If our dentists recommend a root canal treatment, we’ll explain what the procedure involves so you know what to expect at every stage. The stages are:

  • Providing local anaesthetic or other pain relief to numb any pain during your treatment
  • Opening the tooth and carefully removing the damaged or infected pulp tissue
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals to remove all bacteria
  • Reshaping the cavity and placing a sterilised filling material inside
  • Sealing the tooth and restoring its shape and appearance with a large filling or crown

Covering the treated tooth with a crown or other restoration helps to strengthen and protect the tooth. After treatment, the tooth should function like normal, but it won’t feel sensitivity any more. Some teeth may eventually darken after the pulp is removed.

Does root canal therapy hurt?

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation for being a scary or painful dental procedure, but the truth is that it’s no more painful than any other treatment. Our dentists will provide local anaesthesia to numb the part of your mouth being treated, and we can also provide other types of sedation on request.

Leaving a tooth infection untreated can mean dealing with more pain and putting your health at risk. Having a tooth extracted also involves more complications than root canal therapy, as a missing tooth can cause problems in the mouth, and may need to be replaced.
