What are veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite resin that cover teeth to change how they look. Veneers can help with cosmetic issues such as:

  • Stained or discoloured teeth
  • Slightly damaged or worn teeth
  • Slightly misshapen or misaligned teeth
  • Gaps in teeth

Veneers may be an option if your teeth and gums are healthy and your teeth are large enough to support the veneer.

If you’re not suitable for veneers, or your teeth need more extensive repair or correction than can be achieved with veneers, we may recommend another treatment, such as teeth whitening, crowns or Invisalign®.

What are my veneer options?

We offer two types of veneers at Mosman 3D Dental: porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Both options have their pros and cons, depending on your needs.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are made from ceramic that looks like natural tooth enamel. They are custom designed based on impressions of your mouth and bonded over as many teeth as needed.

Compared to composite veneers, porcelain veneers are stronger, longer-lasting, and have a more natural finish. However, they also cost more.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are made from a composite resin, similar to white fillings. Unlike porcelain veneers, they are built up directly on the tooth, rather than being made outside the mouth and bonded into place.

Composite veneers cost less than porcelain and require less preparation of the teeth. On the downside, they are more prone to damage and stains, and don’t usually last as long before they need replacing.

What happens when I get veneers?

The procedure for veneers depends on the type of veneers you’re having.

Porcelain veneers procedure

Porcelain veneers are made outside the mouth and bonded in place using cement. Our dentists will normally have to remove a thin layer of enamel from the tooth first, so your veneers won’t protrude from your mouth.

Placing porcelain veneers normally involves more than one appointment, but at Mosman 3D Dental we can usually design, manufacture and fit your custom veneers in a single visit using CEREC technology, saving you time and hassle.

Composite veneers procedure

Composite veneers are applied directly to teeth, and they don’t usually involve preparation of the tooth. Our dentists will apply composite resin in layers and cure the resin using a blue light. Once a veneer has reached its full size, we’ll shape and polish its surface.

Composite veneers can usually be completed in one visit.
