What are the benefits of a custom-fitted mouthguard?

Many sports clubs and organisations in Australia now operate a mandatory mouthguard policy to lower the risk of serious injuries resulting from impacts with balls, other sporting equipment, players and other injuries.

Sports mouthguards aren’t only recommended for contact sports like rugby and hockey, but also for other activities that can put the mouth at risk, such as skateboarding. Sporting injuries are among the most common dental emergencies, and can be difficult and expensive to treat.

A mouthguard that’s been custom made to fit perfectly over your bite offers more protection than a mouthguard bought from a store. They can also feel more comfortable to wear, won’t come loose during play, and don’t disrupt your breathing or athletic performance like some store-bought products can.

What happens when I get a custom mouthguard?

To make sure your new mouthguard is a perfect fit, our dentists will take impressions of your teeth or your child’s teeth and use these to design your custom appliance. This will be made from a strong but flexible material that fits snugly over your upper teeth.

Once your mouthguard is ready, we’ll check that it fits comfortably and make any final adjustments needed before it’s ready to go. We also recommend bringing your mouthguard along when you or your child have your regular check-ups. This gives us the chance to check that it still fits and is in good condition, or whether it needs to be replaced.

Caring for your custom mouthguard

To keep your mouthguard clean and hygienic between uses, you should rinse it with cold water and dry it thoroughly, avoiding hot water and soap. It should be stored out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources that could cause the material to warp.

Our custom mouthguards are made from high-quality materials, and will generally last longer than an over-the-counter mouthguard, but they will still need to be replaced if they get worn or damaged, go out of shape, or there’s a change in your bite. Children’s mouthguards generally need to be replaced at least once a year, as their mouths and jaws continue to grow.
